Driving school Backnang: what people ask us most

What does the licence cost?
All our prices are published on our prices page. What determines the total is mainly how many driving lessons you need, and that differs from person to person. We will give you an honest range rather than a wishful number.
How long does it take?
Six to ten weeks on average. It depends on how often you attend theory lessons, how many driving lessons you take, and when the TÜV has test slots free. In an intensive course you complete all theory lessons in seven to ten days.
Can I take the theory test in English?
Yes. The theory test can be taken at the TÜV in English, Turkish, Standard Arabic, Russian, Romanian and other languages. The practical test, however, is in German only and an interpreter is not permitted. Because we know that, we prepare you specifically for the German instructions you will hear.
I have a foreign driving licence. What now?
It depends on the country, the date of issue and the category. The Landratsamt Rems-Murr-Kreis decides case by case. Important: licences from outside the EU are usually valid in Germany for only six months after you register your residence. Come and see us — we will look at it together.
What documents do I need to register?
A valid ID card or passport, a biometric photo, an eyesight certificate and proof of a first aid course. If something is missing we will tell you where to get it quickly. We can submit the application to the licensing authority entirely for you.
Can I start theory lessons at any time?
Yes. The fourteen topics do not build on each other — you can join the next lesson and catch up later. Lessons run Monday to Thursday from 16:30 to 18:30.
Should I choose manual or automatic?
On an automatic there is no clutch and no gear changing — a real relief at the start, because you can concentrate on the traffic. However, your licence will carry <strong>code 78</strong>: automatic vehicles only. If you later want to drive a manual car, additional training and an assessment drive are required. If you know you will only ever drive automatic, it is a good choice. If you are unsure, let us talk it through first.
I am 16. Can I start already?
Yes, through accompanied driving at 17 (BF17). You can register six months before your seventeenth birthday, so from the age of 16.5. The theory test may be taken from three months before your birthday, the practical test from one month before.
Are there female instructors?
Yes, we have female driving instructors as well. If that matters to you, say so when you register and we will arrange it.
How often should I take lessons?
We recommend two to three driving lessons a week. At that pace things stick without becoming overwhelming. More often is fine too if you are in a hurry.
Do I have to pay for lessons in advance?
No. There is no advance payment of the total. You pay the base fee when you register, and the driving lessons as you take them — after each lesson or collected. You only pay for what you have actually used.
How long does it take to get a test date?
That depends on how booked up TÜV is and varies through the year. We register you as soon as you are ready — the waiting time is not in our hands, but we will give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic guess.
Can I switch to you from another driving school?
Yes, and you do not start over. The theory lessons you attended, a theory test you have already passed and your application at the Landratsamt all remain valid. You just need the training record (Ausbildungsnachweis) from your previous school. The only thing you pay again is the base fee — every driving school charges it once.
What is the probationary period — and what happens if something goes wrong?
After your first licence there is a two-year probationary period. It is not a suspension: you drive normally. If one serious or two less serious offences occur during it, the period is extended to four years and you must attend a paid advanced seminar (Aufbauseminar). With BF17 the probationary period starts with the test certificate, not at 18.
I failed the eyesight test. Is that the end of it?
No. The eyesight test at the optician is only the first stage. If you do not pass it, you see an ophthalmologist — with that report the process almost always continues, often simply with a condition such as “must wear corrective lenses” on the licence. Bring it to us and we will tell you what the Landratsamt needs in your case.
Can I attend the theory lessons online?
Our theory lessons take place in person in our own classroom at Aspacher Straße, where you can ask questions. The learning app for practising between lessons is on your phone anyway. If attending is difficult for you, talk to us: on the intensive course all lessons fit into seven to ten days, which is often easier to arrange than two evenings a week for months.
Do you offer MPU preparation?
No. The MPU is a medical-psychological assessment carried out by an officially accredited body and has nothing to do with driving instruction. We train learners and prepare them for the theory and practical tests. If you need driving lessons again after an MPU, you are in the right place.
